How Many Pencils Do Elementary Kids Really Use in a School Year?

As the back-to-school season kicks off, parents everywhere are filling backpacks with folders, glue sticks, and of course pencils. But how many pencils does an elementary school student actually use in a year?
Surprisingly, the answer isn’t just one box.
On average, an elementary school student will use between 30 to 50 pencils during the school year. That’s about 1 to 2 pencils per week, depending on how much writing they do, how often pencils are lost or broken, and how many are eaten by classroom pencil sharpeners (or mysteriously vanish into desks).
Here’s why they go fast:
Daily writing practice, spelling tests, and math problems
Broken tips and erasers that wear down
Misplaced or borrowed-and-never-returned pencils
Art projects and doodles galore
In fact, when a local teacher what school supply children need the most, she didn’t hesitate: “Pencils.” She explained that schools often provide pencils daily, but the need is constant and supplies quickly run short.
That’s why EXcelevating Women is stepping up. We're proud to donate pencils for pupils this year to help bridge the gap and support students who may not have consistent access to basic supplies. It’s a small tool that makes a big impact in the classroom.
Tip for parents: Buy pencils in bulk early in the school year and keep a small stash at home for mid-year top-ups. Teachers will thank you, too!
And don’t forget the sharpeners and erasers. A dull pencil is no match for a spelling test!
Have an EXcelevating school year!
